Six Sigma Demystified

A Six Sigma engagement is as simple as picking up your phone - little work is needed on your part to see your process issues resolved.
Six Sigma is a management strategy used by two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies like General Electric, Amazon, Target Corporation, and Boeing. The strategy has proven success in saving companies billions of dollars. For example, General Electric had an estimated $10 billion in benefits after five years of implementing Six Sigma.

The name Six Sigma comes from a manufacturing term. “Six sigma” refers to a process that will yield a production that is almost (96.6667%) flaw-free.

The Six Sigma methodology gathers the specification for the problem or process to treat measures what the current issues are, or "As Is," and designs ways to fix the problem, or a "To Be" solution.

Six Sigma takes a data and statistical approach to discover root causes and inefficiencies in a company’s process to help improve and perfect products and services. The outcome of the findings are quantified in terms of savings, additional revenues, time efficiency, quality and risk avoidance.

It uses the "DMAIC" basic strategy of problem solving:

  1. DEFINE the problem.
  2. MEASURE the current state of process/system.
  3. ANALYZE aspects of the process that affect key outputs, and identify possible solutions.
  4. IMPROVE process and outcome by implementing solutions identified in Analyze stage.
  5. CONTROL a continued success by monitoring and sustaining progress and success.

Motorola originally developed Six Sigma in the 1970s from senior executive Art Sundry’s critique of the company. It was discovered that increasing quality did not increase costs of production, which went against a belief at the time that increased quality meant increased costs.
